Step 1 – Understand the map
The first step is understanding where you're on the map and where you're heading.
The course consists of the start (a purple-colored triangle), several controls (purple-colored numbered circles) and the finish (a purple-colored double circle). The controls have to be passed in numerical order.
Turn the map so that the control that you're heading towards is facing upwards.
Look at the map to see where the control sits. Is it on a boulder? By a trail crossing? etc. If there's a control description, be sure to use it.
Skill tip: Fold the map so it becomes smaller, which makes it easier to see where exactly you are. Make a habit of folding the map at each control to ensure that everything you need to keep track of, such as upcoming controls and different route choices, are clearly visible.
